FreeDOS Crashes on Program Execution

We use FreeDOS in VirtualBox to run some old logic software for the Philosophy Department.  After running fine for a couple of years with default settings, it started acting up after an update to VirtualBox.  Without finding the true cause of the crash, it was found to be memory related.  By switching the default from XMS_Swap to HIMEM, no more crashes.  In c:\fdconfig.sys, the following change was made:

MenuDefault = 3,5

That translates to “use option three with a five second delay before continuing.”
